Oude Molen
When the boldest traditions meet the newest innovations, the aim is always brandy perfection. Tradition René van Eibergen Santhagens is the acknowledged father of South African brandy. Born in Batavia in 1864 to wealthy Dutch parents, he was a remarkable man - cavalry officer, chemical engineer, explorer, adventurer and student of winemaking, learned in the vineyards of a French aristocrat, Marquis in the Cognac district of Bordeaux. Here he fell in love with wine and brandy making – and the Marquis’ daughter Jeanne.
In 1897, answering an advertisement for a position at a South African distillery, he arrived on the highveld armed with science, hands-on experience, gin and whisky kettles and a copper cognac still, carried all the way from France.
In 1903, the now-married Santhagens settled in the Cape and in 1907 they purchased the Oude Molen property. Here René made the first South African brandy in the true Cognac tradition, so setting the standard for brandy in this country.
The Santhagens’ motto was Touchant Toujours le But – “Forever Striving Towards Perfection”. This remains the driving force, and stands proudly on the walls of the new Oude Molen distillery in Elgin, where today tradition and craftsmanship produce South Africa’s most innovative brandies.
Oude Molen Solera Grand Reserve:
Created in the true Spanish Solera ageing method. The Solera system at Oude Molen comprises of 54 by 500 litres sherry butts, and took six years to fill the complete three tier system starting in the top tier with a 3 year old brandy. Only 20% of each barrel in the bottom tier is bottled every 12 months, producing only 4421 bottles per bottling.
René Single Cask:
Named after the father of South African brandy, René Santhagens. Each year our master blender selects a single cask as a tribute to his spirit of excellence.
V.O.V. Rare Vintage Selection:
Aged 14 Years. In 1910 René Santhagens produced Oude Molen V.O.V., the first Cape pot still brandy, in the true Cognac tradition. Today’s V.O.V. is created in the same spirit, from the Distillery’s finest 14 year old brandies.
